Convert Amex Statements to Excel

An American Express statement is a card statement, not a checking statement: instead of deposits and withdrawals it lists charges and payments, and instead of a beginning and ending balance it prints a Previous Balance and a New Balance. The converter reads that same table shape — date, description, signed amount — and reconciles the new balance the same way.

At a glance

PDF Probe converts American Express statements (PDF) into Excel with Date, Description and Amount, then checks the computed New Balance against the printed one and shows the difference before you download. The first 10 pages are free with no sign-up, and your file is deleted within 1 hour.

How an Amex-style statement is laid out

Our test files model the common American Express-style card layout: three columns — Date, Description and Amount — where charges are listed as amounts and the statement prints a Previous Balance at the top and a New Balance at the bottom instead of checking-account balances.

The converter rebuilds the running balance from the Previous Balance and reconciles the computed New Balance against the printed one, to the cent, before you download — the same check as for a checking statement, with different labels.

Digital PDFs are read from the text layer; printed-and-scanned copies go through on-device OCR, so check the red-highlighted cells in the preview.

Tested on 5 synthetic American Express-style statements (2 digital, 3 scanned; 53 transactions): every cell extracted correctly and all 5 reconciled exactly. These are synthetic test files modeled on the common structure, not copies of real Amex statements — real files vary, so always check the preview and the reconciliation line.

How it works

  1. 1

    Upload

Drop your PDF into the converter — digital tables directly, scanned pages via on-device OCR.

  2. 2

    Preview

Check the extracted table first. Low-confidence cells are highlighted red, and balances are reconciled up front.

  3. 3

    Download

Confirm, then get a clean .xlsx (Transactions + Summary sheets) or .csv — amounts are numbers, dates are real dates.

Frequently asked questions

Is an Amex statement different from a bank statement?

Yes, in labels: it lists charges and payments and prints a Previous Balance and a New Balance instead of a checking account's beginning and ending balance. The table shape is the same, so the converter handles it the same way and reconciles the New Balance.

How do I get my Amex statement as a PDF?

Download it from americanexpress.com or the Amex app as a PDF statement, then upload it here. The converter reads the table structure, not a bank-specific template.

Does it work on scanned statements?

Yes. Image-only PDFs are read with on-device OCR. Scanned pages are usually less accurate than digital ones — the preview highlights low-confidence cells in red.

What does the Excel file look like?

A Transactions sheet with Date, Description, Amount and Balance columns, plus a Summary sheet with the Previous Balance, printed and computed New Balance, and the reconciliation difference.

Do you store my statement?

No. Files are deleted automatically within 1 hour, the upload folder is excluded from all backups, and nobody reviews your files.
