How to Convert PDF to CSV
PDF Probe does not export CSV directly — there is no CSV button. The honest path is two steps: convert the PDF to Excel with PDF Probe (first 10 pages free, no account), then open the spreadsheet and Save As CSV. On a 1-page synthetic statement tested 2 November 2026, that chain carried 12 rows and 5 columns through intact, closing balance 3232.19 unchanged.
At a glance
- PDF Probe exports Excel (.xlsx), not CSV. Any guide that skips this is skipping a step.
- First 10 pages are free on PDF Probe, no account; the CSV step costs nothing in Excel, Google Sheets or LibreOffice.
- CSV keeps values only — no formatting, no formulas, no fonts. What you check is the numbers, not the look.
- Tested chain (2 November 2026): 1-page statement, 12 rows x 5 columns = 60 cells, closing balance 3232.19 intact from PDF to final CSV.
- Always check the balance column after conversion. If a row count or a total moved, the extraction missed something — do not import it blind.
Steps
- Convert the PDF to Excel with PDF Probe: open https://clioos.com/pdf/ , upload the PDF and download the .xlsx. The first 10 pages are free with no account, and uploaded files are deleted within one hour.
- Open the .xlsx and check it against the PDF — every row, especially the first and last rows and any total.
- Save As CSV: Excel -> File -> Save As -> CSV UTF-8 (Comma delimited); Google Sheets -> File -> Download -> Comma Separated Values; LibreOffice -> File -> Save As -> Text CSV. Keep UTF-8 so non-English characters survive.
- Verify the CSV: open it in a text editor and confirm the header row, the row count (12 data rows in the test) and the closing balance (3232.19 in the test). If a number lost its decimals (1250.00 printed as 1250), that is display formatting, not a changed value — but confirm it against the PDF before importing.
- Import the CSV into your accounting tool or spreadsheet. CSV has no types: dates and amounts may import as text — set the column types on import if your tool asks.
The honest path (and what PDF Probe does not do)
PDF Probe converts PDF tables to Excel. It does not offer a CSV download, and this guide does not pretend otherwise. CSV is not a PDF conversion target — it is a spreadsheet export format. So the real workflow is always two steps: PDF to Excel, then Excel to CSV.
That second step is free everywhere: Excel, Google Sheets and LibreOffice all save CSV without charge. If a tool advertises one-click PDF to CSV, it is doing these same two steps internally — still verify the row count and a total before you trust its output.
Worked example (tested 2 November 2026)
Test file: a synthetic 1-page statement (12 transactions, 5 columns), generated locally for the test. Test method: the extraction step ran locally (pdftotext plus a spreadsheet) so the data chain itself could be measured end to end; the no-code version of the same chain is PDF Probe for the Excel step, then Save As CSV.
| Stage | Result |
|---|---|
| Source PDF | 1 page, A4, 14,294 bytes |
| Extracted table | 12 rows x 5 columns = 60 cells, all parsed |
| Spreadsheet (.xlsx) | 5,378 bytes |
| Final CSV | 13 lines (header + 12 rows), every row 5 columns, closing balance 3232.19 unchanged |
The closing balance is the check that matters: 3232.19 in the PDF, 3232.19 in the final CSV. If that number moves, something was lost in between — do not import.
What it can't do
- No formatting or formulas: CSV stores values separated by commas. Bold, colours, fonts and formulas do not survive — if you need the look, keep the .xlsx.
- Merged and multi-table pages flatten: a page with several tables or merged header cells may come out as one flat table. Split it back into tables in the spreadsheet before saving CSV.
- Scanned PDFs need OCR first: a scan has no text to extract. PDF Probe OCRs scanned pages for its Excel output; the CSV then carries whatever the Excel captured — check the amounts, not just the row count.
- Dates and amounts may import as text: CSV has no column types. If your accounting tool asks, set date and amount columns explicitly on import.
- Leading zeros can be stripped: account numbers or codes starting with 0 may lose the zero when a spreadsheet opens the CSV. If codes matter, import the CSV through the import wizard and set those columns to text — do not double-click it open.
- Locked PDFs: a password-protected PDF must be unlocked first; no converter opens it on its own.
Free alternatives, honestly compared
- LibreOffice (free, offline): open the .xlsx, File -> Save As -> Text CSV. No account, no upload.
- Google Sheets (free account): import the .xlsx, File -> Download -> Comma Separated Values. Your file goes to Google's servers.
- Excel (Save As CSV UTF-8): the most predictable CSV export, but it needs a licence.
- Scripted route (free, offline): pdftotext plus a spreadsheet library, as in the test above. Full control, but you check the parse yourself — a bad parse rule silently drops rows.
Frequently asked questions
Does PDF Probe export CSV directly?
No. PDF Probe exports Excel (.xlsx). To get CSV, open the spreadsheet and Save As CSV — one extra step, no extra cost.
Will my formatting survive in CSV?
No. CSV stores values separated by commas — no bold, colours, fonts or formulas. If you need the look, keep the .xlsx.
What if my PDF is scanned?
A scan needs OCR before any table exists. PDF Probe OCRs scanned pages for its Excel output; the CSV then carries whatever the Excel captured — check the rows, especially amounts, before importing.
Why does 1250.00 show as 1250 in my CSV?
That is display formatting, not a changed value — spreadsheets drop trailing zeros when saving plain values. Confirm the value against the PDF; if trailing zeros matter to your importer, format the column as text before saving.
Is the CSV safe to import into my accounting software?
Only after verification: row count, header row and at least one total must match the PDF. CSV has no types, so set date and amount columns explicitly on import when your tool asks.
