How to Appear in ChatGPT Answers
There is no submit button for ChatGPT answers. A model mentions a brand when its retrieved or remembered sources make that brand the clear, consistent answer to the question — and skips it when sources disagree, hide behind vague copy, or say nothing specific. So the work is not submission; it is becoming citable, then checking what answers actually say. This guide gives the methods, then the check — and states plainly what the check cannot promise. No live check was run for this guide; the check below is described from the tool's own methodology, not from a result of ours.
At a glance
- No tool, payment, or submission can guarantee a ChatGPT mention or citation. Anyone selling guaranteed placement in AI answers is overselling.
- A check is one observation, not a ranking: the same question can give different answers on different runs. One mention proves possibility, not position.
- The free check runs exactly five buyer questions across two engines (OpenAI and Perplexity) — 10 official API calls per check. Free: 3 checks per email (one-time) and 3 per IP per day.
- Consistency beats volume: one clear fact page that matches what the rest of the web says about you is worth more than ten thin pages that contradict each other.
Steps
- Write the answer page first: one page per question a buyer would actually ask (“best free tool for X”, “X vs Y pricing”), with the direct answer in the first paragraph and the evidence after it. A page that never states the fact cannot be cited for it.
- Audit consistency: search your brand name plus each key fact (price, feature, limit) and fix every mismatch. Models distrust sources that disagree with each other, and your own site disagreeing with a directory counts.
- Add a llms.txt file (see our llms.txt guides and the free generator) and structured data on the key pages, so the facts exist in machine-readable form as well as prose. Neither guarantees a mention — they only remove a reason to be skipped.
- Run the check at https://clioos.com/ai-visibility/ : five buyer questions, your brand name, and an email for the free allowance (3 checks per email, one-time; 3 per IP per day). Each check is 10 official API calls: five questions across OpenAI and Perplexity. Read the result as “mentioned or not, in this run” — not as a rank.
- Act on the result once, then re-check later: if a competitor is named, read which source the answer leans on and earn that ground (a better answer page, a directory listing, a doc). If nobody is named, the question has no citable source yet — that is the opening, not a failure of the check.
What a check actually measures
The AI Visibility checker asks five buyer questions of two engines (OpenAI and Perplexity) through their official APIs and reports whether your brand is mentioned in the answers. That is a spot-check of observed behaviour: it shows what two engines said, to five questions, on one occasion. It does not show a ranking, a share of voice, or a citation guarantee, and it cannot show what the next run will say. Treat a mention as evidence you are citable for that question, and an absence as evidence you are not yet — then fix the pages, not the checker.
What it can't do
- No guaranteed mention or citation: no page, file, payment, or tool can force ChatGPT to name you. Placement in an answer is the model's decision on the day.
- No ranking: a check reports mention or no mention in a run. It is not a leaderboard position and it does not move up or down like a search ranking.
- No stability: answers vary between runs. One good check does not promise the next one, and one bad check does not mean the work failed — re-check after changing the pages.
- No paid placement: there is no paid slot inside ChatGPT answers to buy. A vendor selling one is selling something else.
- No submission channel: there is no form that puts your URL into ChatGPT. The only route in is being a source the model can find and trust.
Frequently asked questions
Can I submit my website to ChatGPT?
No — there is no submission form. The route in is being a clear, consistent, findable source for the question being asked.
Does a free check guarantee I will appear?
No. A check observes one run of two engines. A mention shows you are citable for that question; it does not promise the next run, a citation, or a rank.
How many questions does one check ask?
Five buyer questions across two engines (OpenAI and Perplexity) — 10 official API calls. Free allowance is 3 checks per email (one-time) and 3 per IP per day.
What should I fix first if the check names a competitor?
Find the source the answer leans on, then beat it on that question: a more direct answer page, matching facts everywhere, and a machine-readable llms.txt and structured data.
